When there is a stabbing on Reumannplatz, the ice cream parlor is associated with it. Tichy has had enough. Will the company stay where it is?
Excessive violence on Reumannplatz, right in front of Tichy – the climate in one of the city’s most famous ice cream parlors is getting even icier. “We’ve had enough of it now, we don’t want our name to always be associated with crime,” says Kurt Tichy. This puts the brand’s name under pressure. “At first we wanted to wait and see. “But the media coverage of the knife attack in March became too much for us,” says the entrepreneur. Many would have wrongly regarded Tichy as a crime scene because the article was so poorly worded. And further: “We don’t want to become a political football.”
Many customers disappointed
In fact, many customers are restless. “We get calls from regular customers asking if it is still safe to come to us. Others want us to open a branch in the 1st and 13th district or to deliver the ice cream,” says daughter Xenia Tichy. Nothing has ever happened in the restaurant itself, you “don’t have to be afraid.” “Reumannplatz is better than its reputation,” emphasizes Xenia Tichy. Much has been done to improve the place, and there is now a strong police presence.
Incidents damage the company
“For over 70 years, we have striven to offer our guests ice cream of the highest quality. Generations have made Tichy what it is today,” the two say. It is a shame that incidents beyond their control would damage their business. “Only at the end of the season will the figures show whether fewer customers have come. But that is how it feels now,” says Xenia Tichy. Leaving Reumannplatz would be out of the question.
