A soldier has been stabbed and seriously injured in Britain. Police have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder. The victim is in serious but stable condition.
Police in Kent said investigators were alerted on Tuesday evening. The motive for the attack is still unclear. According to the British news agency PA, investigators do not believe there was a terrorist motive. “The motive for the attack is currently unknown and forms part of our ongoing investigation,” police said. A link to mental health issues is being investigated.
British Prime Minister “shocked”
“I am shocked and appalled by the news that a soldier has been attacked in Kent,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote on Platform X. His thoughts are with the soldier, his family and the armed forces. “I wish him a speedy recovery.”
According to PA, the soldier, aged between 40 and 50, was attacked near a barracks in Gillingham. The suspect is believed to have fled on a motorbike. Investigators later arrested him and seized multiple knives. “We will continue to work closely with Kent Police to understand what happened and to support the investigation,” PA quoted an army spokesman as saying.
