“That’s a little unusual.” A few seconds after these words from a tourist guide in Yellowstone National Park in the US state of Wyoming, countless tourists ran for their lives. On Tuesday, a geyser exploded, throwing a jet-black fountain several meters into the air. A woman captured the chaotic scenes on her smartphone (video above).
Vlada March was on a guided hike with her two children through the Biscuit Basin National Park when her guide stopped and pointed to a geyser with steam rising. March and countless other visitors pulled out their cell phones and prepared to film an interesting natural spectacle. But moments later, there was a huge explosion. A jet-black fountain of mud and rocks was shot into the air, then crashed to the ground.
Damage, but no injuries
The panicked park visitors ran for their lives. Although several parts of the visitor path were destroyed, tourists and park rangers were unharmed. But some of them were then covered from head to toe in dirt. The National Park Administration said in a statement that a hydrothermal explosion had occurred near the famous Old Faithful Geyser. Boiling hot water and steam are shot into the air along with masses of debris and earth. However, it is quite unusual at the location where this natural spectacle took place. Nevertheless, there is “no change in the volcanic system” of the park.
Geologist speaks of ‘dramatic images’
A geologist told the New York Times that the images, which quickly spread on social media, were “very dramatic.” However, the area of the explosion has been closed off until further notice to assess and repair the damage.
