Apnea diving, i.e. diving to great depths without an oxygen tank, is not for the faint of heart. During a competition at Lake Achensee on Saturday, a dangerous situation arose when one of the freedivers (35) lost consciousness twenty meters below the water surface.
The 35-year-old German took part in the competition at Lake Achensee and wanted to dive about 60 metres along a rope around noon without diving gear. But when he was about twenty metres below the surface of Lake Achensee, he lost consciousness for an as yet unknown reason, according to the police.
Saved by another diver
A safety diver rescued the 35-year-old and pulled him to the surface. The water rescue team then brought him to shore. By the time emergency services arrived, the athlete had regained consciousness and was responsive. Nevertheless, he was flown to the clinic in Innsbruck for evaluation.
