New snake in Salzburg: reports wanted!

Date:

Now they are also available in the state of Salzburg. The fifth snake species in this country is called the striped grass snake. Researchers from the Salzburg Nature House are asking the public for their cooperation. Sightings can be reported via mobile phone.

The difference can be seen on the head. The recently discovered grass snake species in Salzburg, the striped grass snake, also has light spots on the back of the head. But they are less pronounced. Anyone who thinks they see such a snake in the wild can help the researchers at the Salzburg Nature House.

“We would like to receive photo reports, ideally via the mobile phone app ObsIdentify,” says Peter Kaufmann. The snake expert worked in a working group with the help of volunteers to find the fifth snake species in Salzburg.

A cross-country analysis makes it clear: two snakes found in Wasenmoos in Oberpinzgau are sterile grass snakes. Further research should clarify how the grass snake and the striped grass snake spread in the Alpine region after the last ice age.
