Vacation is still fun – swimmers in Croatia don’t care about algae slime

Date:

Cloudy joy on the coast of Croatia. At the moment, some bays near Pula are in the grip of algae slime. Nevertheless, the swimmers do not let it spoil their holiday.

The beaches look cloudy and the water has turned an unappetizing brown color. A mixture of algae and mud has a significant impact on the water quality. In addition, the unpleasant odor makes staying on the beach less pleasant. The high temperatures and excess nutrients – such as fertilizers and sewage – in the water are the main causes of algal blooms.

Local authorities advise to avoid the water for the time being, because health risks cannot be ruled out. Anyone who enters the water should shower thoroughly afterwards. Environmental authorities are already working hard to get the problem under control.

However, many beachgoers are ignoring the warnings and enjoying the sea as best they can, although some are clearly disappointed by the changed circumstances. Videos on TikTok also show this.

Recently, Italy also faced similar problems. In some parts of the Adriatic Sea, huge algal blooms occurred, especially in the Gulf of Trieste, Ravenna, Rimini and Ancona.
