It is an expression that someone was allowed to walk calmly and in harmony with everything. What this means medically is rarely clear to the layman. We asked.

It is reassuring when a loved one “passes away peacefully”: the wording is primarily intended to show that someone was allowed to leave without pain. “A peaceful death also requires that the approaching death takes place in a harmonious overall situation,” explains brain researcher Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jürgen Sandkuehler of the Medical University of Vienna.
