Over the past year, hundreds of residents of the occupied West Bank have been killed by Israeli fire, in a spiral of violence carried out largely by Israeli settlers.
Josep BorrellHigh Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security, has put an impressive figure on the table sanctions against members of the Israeli government for enabling violence by colonists against natives in the West Bank busy.
“I confirm my intention to submit a proposal for EU sanctions against facilitators of violent settlers, including some members of the Israeli government,” he wrote in X.
Borrell has condemned the latest attack by Israeli settlers on Palestinians in the village of Jit, as a sign of the “impunity” of Israeli violence that is endangering peace. About a hundred Israeli settlers, armed with clubs, firearms and Molotov cocktails, attacked Palestinians en masse in a village in the northern West Bank, killing one person. Locals complain that the Israeli occupation forces are not protecting them.
“We condemn the settler attacks in Jit, which aim to terrorize Palestinian civilians. Day after day, Israeli settlers fuel violence in the occupied West Bank, endangering any chance for peace.”
Borrell pointed out that the government of Israel is responsible and “must immediately put an end to these unacceptable actions.”
Borrell has previously criticised Itamar Ben GvirMinister of National Security of Israel, for defending the violation of the status quo of the Esplanade of the Mosques and for the call to cut off the flow of aid to the Palestinians, as well as to Bezalel SmotrichFinance Minister who believes it is justified to let two million Palestinians starve to death. They are both settlers.
The International Court of Justice has demanded that Israel evacuate all settlers from the occupied territory, as these settlements are illegal.
The occupied West Bank is experiencing the largest spiral of Israeli attacks in the past two decades. So far in 2024, at least 290 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, including some 70 minors – according to the EFE agency’s count. Last year, they left 520 dead.
On the Israeli side, 21 people were killed: eleven uniformed soldiers and ten civilians, five of whom were settlers.
