Josef Aschbacher, head of the European Space Agency, explains why it is withdrawing from industrial rocket development and why Elon Musk dominates this economic and research area.
“Crown”: As a Tyrolean, you have a long career behind you at the top of the European Space Agency. Now you have presented the Ariane 6, the last of its kind?
Josef Aschbacher: The Ariane 6 is the most powerful heavy-lift rocket, a heavy launcher. The launch took place on July 9 and will certainly serve for ten years, probably even longer. The Ariane 5, the predecessor of the rocket, was used very reliably for more than twenty years. But after the Ariane series, we will have to design and plan differently.
