A major search operation was triggered by a lively male Barbary macaque that escaped from its enclosure in Salem, Germany, just across the border from Vorarlberg. The animal was safely captured on Saturday.
The monkey, named ‘L1’, used two closely spaced treetops in his Salem enclosure. One tree was part of the enclosure, but the other was already behind the fence. ‘L1’ took advantage of this fact and began his adventure in freedom.
“Sporty posture”
Drivers then spotted the monkey at the Oberuhldingen junction on the B31. A team from the enclosure went out to lure the animal with food, but that didn’t work. Eventually, the primate disappeared into a large forest. German police promptly launched a manhunt: they described the fugitive as being around 70 to 90 centimetres tall, ‘of athletic build and with fur’. He also looks like a Barbary macaque.
Anyone who sees the animal should call the authorities and not try to catch the monkey themselves. On Saturday, “L1” appeared again, this time in an apple tree near the Birnau monastery. A well-aimed shot with a tranquilizer gun finally put an end to the escape.
Incidentally, it was not the first time that “L1” ran away. His escape route through the treetops has now been closed off and the branches have been cut.
