Scenes resembling those from an action movie played out on the South Styrian border road (B 69) in Lavamünd in the Carinthian district of Wolfsberg at around 3 a.m. on Monday. A 21-year-old professional driver was driving his van through the valley when he suddenly overlooked a slight left bend.
Braking was no longer possible
“The vehicle then drove down a steep meadow. Because braking was no longer possible, the driver jumped out of the vehicle, which crashed into a farm with full force after about 150 meters,” the police said.
Not only the van and the building, but also the farm owner’s vehicle parked there were seriously damaged. The Polish driver, however, miraculously remained unharmed. The Lavamünd volunteer fire brigade went out for rescue operations.
The car skidded on a wet road surface
Hours later, around 2 p.m., three more Carinthian fire brigades – the FF Wieting, Klein St. Paul and Guttaring – were deployed in the Görtschitztal. A 45-year-old Carinthian woman drove her car off the rainy road and slid 40 meters across a meadow.
Car crashed into creek, driver rescued
The vehicle then hit a tree and fell over a steep embankment into the Görtschitzbach. “The car ended up in the water on the left side,” the Eisnatz team said. “The following road users came to help and were able to rescue her from the vehicle in time.”
The woman from Görtschitztal was taken to the Friesach hospital by the rescue team. The car had to be rescued from the stream by the fire brigade and a towing company.
