Brazen phone scammers are currently causing more and more trouble. The criminals pretend to call Paypal in the name of the payment service and try to lure gullible people into a trap.
The mobile phone rings, an Austrian mobile number appears on the display and on the other end a message sounds that makes you believe that the payment service Paypal wants to debit 999 euros from your account. Many Tyroleans experience this scenario on a daily basis.
Tyroleans targeted by fraudsters
Those who are called must press a number to authorize or cancel the payment. “I ordered a mobile phone online for 350 euros and at first thought that Paypal wanted to charge too much. “There was a bit of panic,” recalls a 42-year-old Tyrolean. But he reacted correctly. He hung up immediately.
Hang up and block the number
“The calls are phishing attempts to extract money from people’s pockets,” the AK said.
If the person being called actually presses a number, he or she is transferred – usually to a real conversation partner, who then engages the victims in a conversation and tries to spy on the access data for their Paypal account. Ideally, block the number immediately!
