After wild riots on Lake Garda on June 2, four people were reported for resisting police and fighting. The Verona prosecutor’s office launched two investigations: the first for molesting five girls on a train bound for Milan, the second for fights and vandalism in the town of Peschiera del Garda, Italian media reported.
Meanwhile, the prefect of Verona, Donato Cafagna, convened a meeting of the Order and Security Commission on Thursday, which will also be attended by the mayors of the lake area and representatives of the regional railways. Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese said Wednesday in parliament in Rome that she wanted to monitor the situation more closely, even as potential rioters arrived at Lake Garda. During the summer weekends, more police officers are deployed in the seaside resorts on Lake Garda.
On June 2, Italy’s national day, reportedly around 2,000 young people from several towns in northern Italy gathered for a flash mob in Peschiera on Lake Garda, which is popular with tourists. The situation escalated: there were fights with injuries and thefts. Tourists were harassed, cars and shop windows were demolished.
Sexual Harassment and Arguments
The incidents in the city, in which drunk young people attack each other, jump on car roofs and later sexually assault women on a train, have kept politicians busy for two weeks.
According to their own statements, some underage women were harassed and sexually assaulted by young men on a fully overcrowded regional train. They were able to leave the train earlier. Five 16-year-old girls have now filed a complaint. The public prosecutor’s office in Verona is now investigating possible suspects.
