Four days after the luxury yacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily and several bodies were recovered, the frantic search for billionaire Mike Lynch has finally begun. The body of the 59-year-old Briton has now been recovered.
The body was found in the hull of the yacht. She was already spotted on Wednesday during searches in the vicinity of the cabin, reports the Italian newspaper ‘La Repubblica’. The Bayesian lies on its side at a depth of 50 meters.
Divers who had already recovered bodies from the cruise ship Costa Concordia, which sank off the Italian island of Giglio in 2012, also joined the search for Lynch. A total of 27 divers and a diving robot were deployed in the search.
According to the Italian coast guard, the other fatalities were senior investment bank manager Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Anne Elizabeth, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Nada.
Fifteen people were rescued in the accident off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning, eight of whom were taken to hospitals. A party was organised on board that lasted until late at night.
The 50-meter-long ship with 22 people on board sank around 05:00 off the coast of Porticello near Palermo after a heavy storm. A nearby boat under the Dutch flag provided first aid to the survivors.
