Two young Spanish mountaineers have tragically died in a fall on the French side of the Mont Blanc massif.
The two men fell hundreds of metres while abseiling at an altitude of around 4,000 metres. The third member of the rope team, who was unharmed, raised the alarm. The Chamonix gendarmerie arrived at the scene in a helicopter and recovered the bodies, which were taken down to the valley.
The accident happened on Wednesday afternoon. The men were part of a rope team of three mountaineers, Italian media reported on Thursday.
Extremely exposed to weather conditions
Mont Blanc on the border between France and Italy is, according to current calculations, the highest mountain in the Alps at 4,805.59 metres. Both France and Italy have shares in the mountain, although the exact border has long been disputed.
In recent days, there have been repeated fatal accidents on the mountain. Due to its height, Mont Blanc is extremely exposed to weather conditions. Serious accidents occur time and again.
