In the sights of the FSB, Putin’s secret service investigates CNN reporters

Date:

Russia’s domestic intelligence service FSB is investigating a reporter for the American broadcaster CNN for reporting from Russian territories taken over by Ukraine. The FSB justified its actions by saying that the journalist from Britain had crossed the border illegally.

Two Ukrainian press representatives are also under investigation on the same charges. The three journalists face up to five years in prison in Russia. The FSB announced that it would soon issue international arrest warrants.

There was no immediate comment from CNN. Last week, the network aired a report from Suya in Russia’s Kursk region. The city is under the control of Ukrainian troops.

US diplomats summoned
Earlier this week, the government in Moscow summoned a US diplomat to protest reporting by US journalists in Kursk. Last week, Italian broadcaster RAI sent home two reporters who had also reported from Kursk and who were under investigation by the FSB.

Only recently, American journalist Evan Gershkovich was able to return to his home country from Russian custody in a prisoner exchange. He was sentenced to 16 years in a camp for suspected espionage. Russia threatens journalists with punishment for “discrediting” its armed forces. Last year, the maximum sentence for such cases was increased from five to 15 years.
