Vienna Kirtag begins – Neustift celebrates with politics, youth and police

Date:

Brilliant start of the Neustifter Kirtag: the increased threat of terrorism could not dampen the mood at the folk festival. The “Krone” was there and accompanied the traditional march in the west of the city.

For four days, the state of emergency is in effect again in the quiet wine town of Neustift am Walde. The biggest festival spectacle in Vienna takes place. With many familiar things, such as the ceremonial procession of the Hauerkrone, which stops daily at numerous wine taverns during the fair. But there is also something new on the program.

The strange event of drag queen Candy Licious caused a stir beforehand. Visitors should also be prepared for an increased security concept, after all, the Kirtag is the largest free open-air event in Vienna after the Danube Island Festival. There are bag checks, drones and security at the entrances to the area and in the wine taverns.

We were there on the opening day and had a look around. Many young people gathered at Heuriger Wolff in the afternoon. “We come here every year, but I didn’t notice any increased security checks and my bag wasn’t checked,” says Lisa Kargl. She still feels safe at the fair. And what does she say about the prices? “It’s expensive, but that’s what you’re used to from late-night restaurants,” says the student.

Langos & Co. “burns” a deep hole in your wallet
We took a closer look at the prices; some market stalls charge outrageous prices. A waffle costs a whopping 8.80 euros. A Langos with cheese 9 euros. But the wine taverns themselves also serve a lot on the fair days. A spritz costs 3.60 euros and a litre of wine costs 28.80 euros. However, this only dampens the drinking mood for very few people. “I haven’t looked at the prices yet, but it’s certainly not cheap. But I’m ready for it,” says visitor Leon Karbeck.

During the election campaign, many politicians also visit the fair. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) had announced his presence, but was then represented by the Vienna state party secretary Barbara Novak. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) made a short detour before continuing to the Coldplay concert. The leaders of the Viennese parties were also there: Christoph Wiederkehr (Neos), Karl Mahrer (ÖVP) and Dominik Nepp (FPÖ).
