With its long-running ARM Macbooks, Apple is letting its Windows rivals get ahead of themselves: Devices with Intel or AMD chips can’t compete in terms of efficiency—and may never do so with their x86 processor architectures. That’s why Microsoft and its hardware partners are making a new attempt to create Windows laptops with power-saving ARM processors. Will it be a success this time?
The industry has known for a decade that x86 processors, as found in most PCs and laptops, are not ideal for use in durable mobile devices – and so there have been several attempts to bring ARM devices to the Windows world. One of the first was Microsoft’s own Surface RT, which flopped miserably. Since then, however, a lot has happened with ARM processors, with Apple successfully making the switch. Now, with the support of chipmaker Qualcomm, Microsoft and the PC industry are looking to catch up. Krone+ tested whether they could do just that with the Copilot AI laptop HP Omnibook X AI.
