From Sunday – Polio vaccinations for 640,000 children in the Gaza Strip

Date:

In the controversial Gaza Strip, hundreds of thousands of children will be vaccinated against polio starting Sunday morning. The aim is to reach more than 90 percent of children under the age of ten. There must be pauses in the fighting that are limited in time and place.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), clinics, doctors’ offices and mobile teams are expected to vaccinate 640,000 children against the virus responsible for polio within a few days. The aim is to reach more than 90 percent of children under the age of ten. There must be pauses in the fight that are limited in time and place.

First doses of vaccine administered on Saturday
The first doses of the vaccine were administered Saturday during a press conference by the Hamas-controlled health authority in the Gaza Strip (see video above). The WHO called it an opening ceremony.

Recently, the first case of polio was reported in Palestinian territory in 25 years. Since the war began after the Hamas terrorist attack on the Israeli border area on October 7 last year, many babies in the Gaza Strip have not been able to be vaccinated.

According to WHO information, the vaccination campaign will start in the central Gaza Strip. After three or possibly more days, the campaign should continue in the south before moving to the north of the coastal strip.

According to the WHO, poor sanitary conditions in the coastal strip, where many displaced people are forced to live in cramped spaces and clean water is scarce, could contribute to the rapid spread of the disease.
