On Saturday, a helicopter with a total of 22 people on board disappeared over Russia’s Kamchatka region in the east of the country. The wreckage with dozens of dead was found on Sunday on the peninsula famous for its volcanoes.
The Ministry of Civil Protection in Moscow said 17 bodies had been discovered so far. The search for the remaining prisoners continued on Sunday. Nineteen tourists and three crew members were traveling in the Mi-8 plane, which has been missing since Saturday.
Thick fog made the search difficult
The helicopter flew in the area around the Vachkashets volcano and did not arrive at the landing site in the village of Nikolayevka at the scheduled time, it was reported. Due to dense fog, the search from the air could not be carried out until a day later.
According to the information, the wreckage of the helicopter was discovered at an altitude of about 900 meters – not far from the place where the last radio contact was made. The aviation authority is investigating the accident, reports the Russian news agency TASS.
Always crashes on the peninsula
On the Kamchatka Peninsula, 6,800 kilometers east of Moscow, helicopters are a major means of transportation, but crashes are common. The region’s weather is often erratic.
For tourists, private companies offer helicopter flights to reserves where bears live or landing in volcanoes on hot lakes. The peninsula is known for its great geological activity with frequent earthquakes and active volcanoes.
