Woman raised alarm – lost on mountain hike – then night fell

Date:

A German hiker in the Tyrolean lowlands underestimated the tour and probably overestimated himself on Monday. The 60-year-old got lost during the descent of the “Ellmauer Halt” (2,344 meters) – his strength left him bit by bit and suddenly night fell. Because he did not return to the hotel, his wife raised the alarm.

The 60-year-old set off in the early morning hours for a mountain hike from Ellmau to the Ellmauer Halt. The German reached the summit, but during the descent disaster began.

Lost orientation – strength decreased
“He lost his way and deviated from the planned route. For this reason, he decided to descend via the Scharlinger Boden towards the Hans Berger House without further delay,” the police reported. However, due to the length of the tour, he slowly lost his strength, “and therefore his progress was slow,” the investigators continued.

At around 7pm, he was able to send his wife a live location on his mobile phone before the battery died, which meant he could no longer see the path in the falling darkness. “He therefore wanted to spend the night outside,” it was said.

Concerned woman called 911
After the man still hadn’t returned to the hotel around 9 p.m., his wife made the emergency call. The Kufstein mountain rescue service then started a search in the Hans-Berger-Haus area in the Kaisertal with the support of three search dogs and the drone of the Kufstein district fire brigade.

Completely exhausted but unharmed
Shortly after 22:30, the 60-year-old was finally found in the area of the lower Scharlingen grounds on pathless terrain. The man was completely exhausted, but unharmed. He was brought safely down to the valley.
