A 71-year-old driver had a breakdown on Tuesday evening on the Felbertauernstrasse in East Tyrol. His car caught fire in a tunnel gallery. The pensioner was not deterred by this and drove further outside. There he fought the fire together with another driver.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., the 71-year-old local resident was driving his car on Felbertauernstrasse in the tunnel gallery there towards Mittersill when he suddenly noticed smoke. “The driver was able to drive his car out of the tunnel and stop at the nearest parking lot,” the police reported.

A following driver came to the pensioner’s aid and began to fight the fire in the engine compartment with his fire extinguisher. The alerted volunteer fire brigade Matrei in East Tyrol took over the extinguishing work after arrival.

Both drivers were unharmed, but the 71-year-old’s car was significantly damaged. In addition to the fire brigade, five rescue workers and marshals from Felbertauernmautstrasse were present.
