The European Commission recommends that Moldova and Georgia are also considered candidates if they join the Community Club
The European executive this Thursday recommended the candidacy of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia for the European Union (EU). The reports from Brussels show that the three countries have made “great progress” politically and economically, moving them closer to Europe. In the case of Ukraine, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has assured that “things are moving in the right direction”. However, he stresses that the country “still has a lot of work to do” to meet European standards and is demanding major reforms from the Zelensky government.
On the rule of law, von der Leyen pointed out that the country has already developed a body to fight corruption, “now we just need to get it started.” The protection of fundamental rights is another of the most important aspects of Brussels’ demands. “Ukraine has met 80% of the recommendations. What remains is the passing of a law protecting national minorities,” he said.
The President of the European Commission already conveyed all these considerations to Ukrainian President Volodímir Zelensky during his trip to Kiev ten days ago. The leader, for his part, conveyed to Brussels his full willingness to meet the necessary requirements to join the EU. “We understand that, as long as the war lasts, the country will not be able to meet all the requirements – von der Leyen admitted – but we believe that it should be considered a candidate to enter the EU.”
The Community Executive also recommended that Moldova and Georgia be given ‘candidate member state’ status. The final decision will be taken by the European Council at the next summit to be held on 23-24 June.
