The second day of the Airpower air show in Zeltweg, Styria also ended as planned; there were no incidents in the air. The flow of fans was enormous and in the afternoon the capacity limit was reached. Now there is a traffic jam when we leave. Highlights included the Spanish relay and a new Dreamliner.
Nice weather, busy flight schedule: the crowd stormed the Zeltweg on Saturday to watch the Airpower air show. Around lunchtime there were still traffic jams, which only cleared up in the early afternoon. The area was full and the capacity limit had been reached, but according to the police it was not necessary to close the area.
“Patience will be the watchword of the day,” a police spokesman said early in the morning. “Unfortunately, what was predicted is happening: the transport network is reaching its limits and the flow of traffic is coming to a standstill.” Buses arriving without pre-booked parking tickets and cars parked in side streets also caused problems.
In the afternoon, fans started to leave. There are now major traffic jams. Two traffic accidents on the S36 (one involving three vehicles) worsen the situation.
Here are impressions from the second Airpower day:
Lots of applause for the Spanish relay
The flight program created enthusiasm. The Spanish aerobatics team Patrulla Aguila was able to demonstrate their skills – on Friday their show fell victim to the rainy weather. Another highlight was the low flight of an AUA Boeing Dreamliner, which came almost directly from New York to Styria.
The flight program ended shortly before 6 p.m. No incidents or accidents occurred during the performances. According to the military, a total of 250,000 visitors were welcomed: 100,000 on Friday and 150,000 on Saturday.
The departure on Friday went smoothly
The night from Friday to Saturday was quiet and the departure of the fans on Friday evening went smoothly, according to the police, without too much traffic jam on the streets. It was felt that the two-hour accompanying program with music and film screening (“Top Gun: Maverick”) after the end of the air show at 17:30 had postponed the departure. In fact, around 18:30 it took barely fifteen minutes to get from one of the parking lots to the highway. The departure by bus and S-Bahn also went smoothly and without incident.
