Bolivia has declared a national state of emergency amid massive forest fires, the Defense Ministry said Saturday.
“This will allow us to receive more flexible and effective support from friendly countries and international cooperation,” said Bolivian Defense Minister Edmundo Novillo.
3 million hectares of land burned
He told reporters that the national emergency made it possible to quickly coordinate international aid.
According to the Brazilian Space Research Agency (Inpe), which also monitors forest fires, three million hectares of land in Bolivia have already fallen victim to flames this year, the most since 2010.
Peak of the fire season
In South America, the annual fire season is currently at its peak, with serious fires also being reported in Brazil and the Amazon following record droughts.
