A real mite invasion is currently causing excitement on the Croatian Adriatic coast – and especially severe itching!
In addition to the algae slime that covered some stretches of beach on the Adriatic coast this year, small parasites are now also playing spoilsport. According to a media report, Istria is the most affected. But now there have also been sightings in the towns of Sisan and Premantura and on the island of Fratarski.
Where danger lurks on the beaches
But it may not be the well-known house dust mite, but grass mites. They lurk in trees and meadows, which are often found on Croatian beaches.
An encounter with a grass mite can certainly have long-term consequences. Spider bites can cause itchy skin irritations and allergic reactions that can last up to two weeks. For most people, the attacks are not really dangerous; grass mites mainly target dead skin cells. Only people with allergies need to be careful.
Experts advise: avoid grassy areas, wear closed shoes, use insect repellent and, after spending time in the affected areas, take a thorough shower and wipe your body thoroughly with a towel.
