Contrary to initial information, the Syrian arrested in Germany for suspected plans to attack German Bundeswehr soldiers was not blameless. He had already been in prison for several months – in Austria…
The 27-year-old is said to have obtained two machetes in order to kill as many Bundeswehr soldiers as possible during their lunch break in the city centre of Hof in Upper Franconia. Investigators assume that the Syrian is a supporter of a radical Islamic ideology. With the attack, he wanted to disrupt the population and cause unrest. He is suspected of preparing a serious act of violence that would endanger the state. However, the presumption of innocence applies until a final conviction has been pronounced and he is currently in custody.
The man was sentenced to 19 months in prison for smuggling by the regional court in Eisenstadt in Burgenland, a spokesperson for the Munich public prosecutor’s office told dpa. After the conviction in early August 2018, the man was released in late April 2019.
After Thursday’s arrest in the Upper Franconian Hof region of Bavaria, investigators initially announced that the man had no previous convictions. That is true – but only in relation to Germany, the prosecutor’s office now added.
Deportation was not planned
According to researchers, the Syrian entered Germany ten years ago. It was said that he was enjoying subsidiary protection. This limited protection applies to people who are not recognized as individually persecuted refugees, but who provide valid reasons why they would be at risk of serious harm – for example, from a civil war – if they return to their country of origin. According to the information, deportation was not planned.
Information from witnesses led to the man
According to Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, a “witness tip from the suspect’s environment” led investigators to the Syrian. This was received by the police last Wednesday. The case shows that the investigating authorities “acted immediately when there was a suspicion”. The public prosecutor’s office did not want to comment on the current state of the investigation.
