Fearing his neighbor’s golden retriever “Goldi”, a 34-year-old in Wildon, Styria, grabbed an axe and threatened the dog’s owner to “cut him to pieces”. Although his parents were able to prevent the attack, the man had to answer to the jury.
“The dogs were walking without a leash and without a muzzle, that scared me,” the Romanian told chairman Andreas Rom on Tuesday about the situation at the time. Especially ‘Goldi’, the golden retriever, would have scared him with his barking. The second dog, a Greenlander, was rather inconspicuous.
“I wanted to chop him into pieces”
“He said he wanted to cut me up,” the victim told the jury. The 34-year-old did not deny that he wanted to attack his neighbor: “I wanted to hurt him. ‘I was full of anger and fear,’ he justified himself. He allegedly told police: “I wanted to cut him up. I don’t have a gun like you do, otherwise I could have shot him.”
“He wants to kill someone because of his illness, and there won’t always be someone to stop him,” prosecutor Gilbert Zechner-Gfreter said in his plea. “The fact that someone shows a hoe doesn’t mean he or she will strike,” defense attorney Alexander Haas said.
“Serious acts including murder cannot be ruled out”
Psychiatric expert Manfred Walzl explained that the 34-year-old suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and therefore a serious and long-term mental illness. Although he is generally inconspicuous, friendly and kind, further serious acts, including murder, cannot be ruled out.
He spoke very clearly in favor of placement in a forensic therapeutic center. The jury followed this advice.
