Students eagerly helped out – cleaning up instead of school after terrible floods

Date:

This is solidarity in action! Students from Lambach (Upper Austria) helped their teacher in Lower Austria after flooding. His house was badly damaged by the flooding. The children came to help clean for a day – on a voluntary basis. Now they are also collecting donations for the reconstruction.

Staying together in difficult times, that is what the teachers, students and parents of the Lambach Sports Middle School demonstrated. They helped after the floods in Lower Austria.

And it happened like this: “One of our teachers lives in Lower Austria and is at school during the week. A week ago Friday he went home. A few hours later he sent videos. His house and that of his in-laws were completely flooded. He and his mother-in-law even had to be rescued by helicopter,” reports Gerald Grecksamer, the school’s director. And it quickly became clear to him: “We have to do something.”

Everyone immediately wanted to help
On Monday, he told his teachers and fourth-grade students about his idea. “Everyone wanted to help right away,” says the principal, still touched by the wave of willingness to help. After receiving approval from the education board, they left early Tuesday for Markersdorf – nine children, two teachers, the school principal and a student father. Equipped with drying equipment and cleaning supplies, we drove to the house.

Children thanked me
Several groups worked there for hours, also with neighbors. Four houses were cleaned. “You can’t imagine what it looks like there. When it comes to humanity, the children learned more than in a school year,” says Grecksamer: “But the best thing was that the children thanked us on Monday evening for letting them come with us.” The school has set up a donation to continue helping and more drying equipment will be brought to Lower Austria.

The SPÖ Lambach also wants to help the affected family. “Due to the flood disaster and the information about the fate of a Lambach teacher as a result of this disaster, the SPÖ Lambach has decided not to print and send an advertising brochure for the National Council elections and to give the money intended for this to the family in need,” it says in a broadcast.
