From 1 October 2024, a free year-round kindergarten will be introduced in Burgenland, so that work and family can be better coordinated – even during the holidays. However, parents should not exhaust the maximum opening hours, warns renowned educational psychologist Christiane Spiel.
Mothers and fathers who work full-time and have no family network to care for their children during their absence are dependent on nurseries and kindergartens whose opening hours correspond to their working hours. According to the Chamber of Labor, the children must be able to be placed in external housing in appropriate educational and care facilities for “at least 45 hours a week on at least four days 9.5 hours and at least 47 weeks a year”. In the past school year, there were already 196,000 children in the whole of Austria. That is 25,600 (plus 15 percent) more than a year ago.
