The EU and several countries support the request given the “unacceptable risk of broader regional escalation.” Israel is turning a deaf ear and continuing its bombing campaign in Lebanon and preparing for a ground invasion.
The governments of France and the United States have called for a 21-day “temporary” ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah with a view to “a diplomatic agreement” to “to prevent further escalation on both sides of the border, which has received the support of the European Union and several countries, including several Arabs.
“The time has come to reach an agreement on the border between Israel and Lebanon that guarantees security and allows civilians to return to their homes. The exchanges of fire that have taken place since October 7, and in particular over the past two weeks, threaten to widen the conflict and harm civilians,” read a joint statement by French President Emmanuel Macron and American Joe Biden.
As they have indicated, they have been working together in recent days on a joint call for a ceasefire, and the negotiated declaration now also has the support of Australia. Canada, Germany, ItalyJapan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and Qatar. “We call for broad participation and immediate support from the governments of Israel and Lebanon,” they noted.
Subsequently, all these countries issued a statement indicating that “the situation between Lebanon and Israel since October 8 is unbearable and poses an unacceptable risk of a broader regional escalation” that “benefits no one, not even the Israelis nor the Lebanese people.
These countries, whose leaders are in New York to participate in the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, have expressed “their readiness to fully support all diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement, building on the efforts of recent months”.
Exactly, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuleft this morning for New York, where he will arrive next Friday. Several of his ministers, including several ultras, have asked Netanyahu to reject the request for a ceasefire.
Along the same lines: Israel continued in the early morning with his campaign bombings against various points of the south and east from Lebanon. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least nine people have been killed in these attacks. Yesterday, at least 81 people were killed and hundreds injured.
