The suspected attacker in the German city of Solingen only bought the knife on the day of the attack, the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul, announced on Thursday. There are accompanying video recordings showing the man making a purchase in a local shop.
The 26-year-old is also seen in the footage with a mobile phone, which police are still searching for. An area in Solingen was evacuated for this purpose on Thursday. Another mobile phone, which had already been discovered in a meadow, was destroyed, Reul said. The damage was probably caused deliberately (see police search video above).
The Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia also provided further details about a video claiming responsibility that was distributed via channels of the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS). The material was actually recorded directly in Solingen. The security forces have since deleted it and made sure it can no longer be found. How the attacker’s video file ended up with IS is still being investigated.
The man lived in refugee shelters
The suspect, a 26-year-old Syrian, recently lived in a refugee shelter. A search is still underway in the area. In the meantime, Issa Al H. is in custody on suspicion of murder. He is said to have killed three people with a knife and wounded eight others during a city festival in Solingen on the evening of 23 August. IS has claimed responsibility for the crime.
