Some disgusting toilets irritate the residents of Salzburg. There are always complaints about dirty toilets. Not much has happened yet, but at least toilets without a sewer connection are already being used in a test phase.
The Google rating of the Rauchbichl playground in Itzling is actually great: 4.6 stars. Spinning toys, swings, slides, sandbox and cable car: a gem for children and parents. But the playground has one disadvantage: the toilet is worth a maximum of one star.
Sprayed with graffiti, the doors are unstable, it is dark through the spray-painted windows. Alexander Peterlik likes to go to the playground with his child. But: “Some children there are afraid to go to the toilet. As an Itzlinger, I just wish upgrades would be made here. The fabric is generally okay, but for women it is especially unpleasant if there are unstable doors.”
It has been a political issue for a long time
The list of complaints about defective public toilets is long. At Glanspitz there is a construction site toilet behind a hut. There are disgusting toilets at Salzachsee. The old city lacks accessibility and cleanliness. Public restrooms have been a constant topic in the 2024 mayoral election campaign.
What does the situation look like six months after the elections? Anna Schiester, then councilor for construction, says: “There is still a need for expansion. The eco-loos are a good solution, but you should also think about more toilets in the old city. The most important thing is accessibility.” Not much has happened yet in the ongoing debate over public toilets and misshapen toilet facilities.
Sebastian Lankes, representative of the SPÖ community, has now taken Rauchbichl’s complaint from Alexander Peterlik to heart: he has submitted an application for immediate, comprehensive renovation. Now it is the turn of the responsible deputy mayor, Kay-Michael Dankl (KPÖ). Since the elections, he has already sent seven new Öklos into a test phase – these do not require a sewer connection.
