Swarms of Russian drones attacked the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Monday evening. According to the Ukrainian army, anti-aircraft units spent hours fending off several waves of attacks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, said Russia would achieve “all its goals” in Ukraine. “The truth is on our side! All set goals will be achieved,” Putin emphasized in a video message published on Monday to mark the second anniversary of the annexation of four regions in Ukraine claimed by Russia.

Putin considers the need for a war of aggression “fully confirmed”
The West “systematically planted hatred and radical nationalism, incited hostility against everything Russian, supplied weapons, sent mercenaries and advisors and prepared the Ukrainian army for a new war,” Putin said, justifying the need for the war of aggression as “ fully confirmed.” Six months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia declared that the Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson had been annexed. However, Moscow only partially controls these regions.
Anti-aircraft guns in action for hours
“Several enemy drones are above and near the capital,” Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging service. Eyewitnesses reported numerous explosions in Kiev, indicating the use of anti-aircraft systems. Objects in the air were hit. Initially, there were no reports of damage or casualties as a result of the recent attacks. The nighttime air raid siren lasted more than five hours.

Since approximately one o’clock in the morning (local time), an air raid siren has been in effect in Kiev, the surrounding region and all of eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force had previously reported several groups of Russian drone attacks on Kiev and western Ukraine. In addition, the launch of several guided bombs from Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine was recorded around 4:40 a.m. local time, the military said.
The government in Moscow initially made no comment on the attacks. Russia carried out several airstrikes on Kiev and other parts of Ukraine in September, attacking the country’s energy, military and transportation infrastructure and killing dozens of civilians.
Damage in the Mykolaiv region due to a drone attack
An unspecified infrastructure object was set on fire by a Russian drone in the Mykolaiv region of southern Ukraine. Ukraine’s air force said 67 of 73 attacking drones across the country had been shot down. Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for more than two and a half years.
