Mikaila Ulmer (17) is living the American childhood dream. When she was 11, she “only” needed an 80-year-old juice recipe from her great-great-grandmother and the help of bees.
Mikaila, now 17, got the idea to have her own juice stand in front of her house when she found a tattered cookbook written by her great-great-grandmother in the basement. It was from the 1940s and contained a recipe for flaxseed soda. The girl sold this more well than badly – until she got an inspiration.
Honey instead of industrial sugar
She told broadcaster NBCBLK: “I was stung by a bee. Then I came into contact with insects and learned how important they are to nature.” She therefore decided to sweeten her juice with honey instead of industrial sugar and to name her drink “Me and the Bees Lemonade” and the bee juice). The new creation became a hit that also circulated outside their neighborhood.
When she was 11, she got an offer from the organic supermarket chain Whole Foods to sell her juice across America. As a result, the now high school student has brought in a sweet $11 million so far.
10 percent of the profit is donated
Mikaila donates 10 percent of the profits to a bee rescue organization. The young businesswoman has also developed a lip balm and written a book about bees. She justifies her success as follows: “You must continue with your idea with all your passion. Then everyone can be successful with their own company.”
