Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has denied discussing plans for a possible ceasefire with Russia during his current tour of Western European capitals. This is “false information” controlled by Russia.
“I saw in some media that I came here to talk about a ceasefire. This is wrong,” he said on Thursday after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris.
Zelensky reiterated his call for Western allies to continue supporting Ukraine. “We need your help before winter,” he said.
The Ukrainian president had previously met in London with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and new NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. It is “really important that we can demonstrate our continued commitment to supporting Ukraine,” Starmer said. Rutte emphasized that it is not only about Ukraine, but also about ‘the defense of the West and how we stay safe’.
Zelenskyj later wanted to travel from Paris to Rome, where his schedule included meetings with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday evening and Pope Francis on Friday morning. On Friday he is expected to meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in Berlin.
