Last year, a new regulation in Styria caused an uproar that allowed the strictly protected otter to be killed. Research now shows that the measure has no positive impact on fish stocks in rivers – but the lobby is still pushing for an extension of the regulations.
Killing otters does not lead to any measurable recovery of fish stocks in rivers: this was the conclusion of a study commissioned by the state of Upper Austria. A total of 52 otters were sampled from four different river stretches over three years. Conclusion: An improvement in fish stocks could not be measured in any of the research components. A decline was even noted in two of the monitoring areas.
