In view of the emergencies in the Middle East, Austria is supporting international aid organizations on the ground with additional resources.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, three million euros have been made available to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Syria. Of this amount, the UNHCR in Lebanon receives two million euros and one million euros goes to the UNHCR in Jordan.
Schallenberg: “Increase in refugees possible”
Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) said: “The Middle East has never been free of cruelty and suffering. But for a year now, the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the region has continued to deteriorate.” He warned of a possible collapse of already fragile states, which could lead to a significant increase in the number of refugees.
43 million for those affected by the war in the Middle East
In total, Austria’s humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza and the region badly affected by the conflict since the Hamas attack on Israel and the start of the Gaza war amounts to 43 million euros.
