Due to illegal migration, Austria maintains extraordinary controls at the Schengen border with the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The checks were extended a few days ago until April 15, 2025, a spokesperson for Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) confirmed on Tuesday. The controls are necessary to close gaps in the control network and thus prevent evasive movements by the smuggling mafia.
Checks on Hungary and Slovenia before extension
Border controls with Hungary and Slovenia are also expected to be extended for six months from November 12, 2024, the report said.
Border controls are in fact not planned within the Schengen area and must be reported to the European Commission.
Germany takes a similar approach to Austria
However, in addition to Austria, several other Schengen member states, including Germany, maintain border controls due to concerns about illegal migration or security concerns.
