A refugee child was born on a small Greek rocky island in the strait between Turkey and the island of Lesbos. The Eritrean mother and the newborn boy are doing well, it reported on Wednesday. Greek Coast Guard officials rescued the two and 28 other migrants on Lesvos.
The migrants were “very lucky” because landing on this rocky island is very dangerous, a coastguard officer said. They apparently left Turkey in a dinghy. However, the wind prevented them from reaching Lesvos and landed on the rocky island of Barbalia, which is about 1.5 kilometers away.
According to the government in Athens, an increasing number of migrants have been registered in recent weeks trying to cross from Turkey to the Greek islands. The Greek Coast Guard often prevents this. Aid groups accuse Athens of illegal pushbacks, which the Greek government rejects and in turn calls on Turkey to stop the migrants. The EU is helping Turkey with a multi-billion dollar aid program to stop this influx of people into the EU. The EU accession candidate Turkey is considered a safe third country.
