Love and hate are close together when it comes to Pizza Hawaii. There must finally be a word of power, says a Viennese restaurateur.
Some love them, some hate them. Hardly any other dish divides opinions as much as the Hawaiian pizza – because of the pineapple. Gaetano Brancato, owner of Pizzeria Mergellina (11., Simmeringer Hauptstraße 185), now says: “It’s enough!”
Authentic craftsmanship
The born Neapolitan and guardian of the traditional southern Italian pizza art is starting a citizens’ initiative that campaigns for a law against pineapple on pizza. “In principle, I have nothing against non-Italian pizzerias,” says Brancato, “as long as the craftsmanship remains authentic.” But pineapple on pizza would be going too far. “We Neapolitans can no longer accept this.”
Eat well, laugh often, love deeply
It remains to be seen whether his initiative will actually reach politicians and what penalties could be imposed. But it is clear that the tropical fruit has no place in his pizzeria, whose motto is “Mangia bene, ridi spesso, ama molto”. In German: eat well, laugh often, love much – but not the pineapple on the Italian national dish.
And who knows, Toast Hawaii might be on the cards soon.
