Syrians, border controls – Netherlands: Government draws up strict asylum package

Date:

The Netherlands is heading for a significant tightening of asylum laws and is also planning border controls in November. However, the asylum emergency propagated by Geert Wilders is not declared.

The government partners had been advocating for tightening asylum legislation for months. Wilders wanted to declare a state of emergency to impose strict measures without parliamentary approval. This was met with resistance from his partners, because there is no legal basis for the state of emergency.

The asylum status may be valid for a maximum of three years
According to the measures presented, asylum status should only be valid for a maximum of three years. The coalition also wants to return Syrian refugees and declare at least parts of Syria safe.

Recognized refugees should have fewer rights to object to proceedings and no longer have the right to housing.

Central objective of the right-wing coalition
Tightening asylum legislation is a central goal of the right-wing coalition. About a year ago, Wilders’ radical right-wing Freedom Party (PVV) won the House of Representatives elections. His PVV has now been in power for more than three months, together with the right-liberal VVD, the center party NSC and the right-wing populist farmers’ party BBB.

40,000 asylum seekers per year
The number of asylum seekers remains stable at around 40,000 per year. However, the Netherlands has had major problems with housing people for years. Experts and authorities cite austerity measures and a general housing shortage as reasons.
