The “national holiday” has only existed since 1965. From 1955 to 1964, October 26 was called “Flag Day”. On May 15, 1955, the State Treaty was signed that restored Austria’s sovereignty.

This important day in Austria’s history is always celebrated. Every year, visitors can look forward to a colorful program of armed forces, politics and police.

The most important program points on October 26:

  • 9.30 am Federal President resigns Alexander Van der Bellen a wreath on Heldenplatz, followed by the federal government at 10 a.m
  • It’s from 10am Presidential office accessible to visitors. Van der Bellen and his wife Doris Schmidauer welcome the guests in front of the Hofburg on Ballhausplatz.

  • The Federal Chancellery is open for visitors between 12:00 and 17:00.

  • Visitors can take a one-hour guided tour between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m Parliament participate.

  • It will be on the national holiday Federal army as usual in Vienna – and this year also in Salzburg in the Schwarzenberg barracks – invite you to an information and performance show.

  • Hundreds Recruits will be sworn in at Heldenplatz from 11 a.m., and the Federal President will lay a wreath at the outer castle gate to get things started.

New this year among the weapons and vehicles presented at Vienna’s Heldenplatz are the ‘Lion’ helicopter and the ‘Skyranger’ anti-aircraft system. A “Black Hawk” will also land for the spectators. In addition, paratroopers from the fighter command must demonstrate their skills.
