The Unglamorous Truth About “Ostarrichi”

The national holiday should be about Austria! Scientific expert “Krone” Dr. Christian Mähr therefore looked at the first document in which Austria was first mentioned as “Ostarrichi” and dared to look deeper into the 10th century.

“Ostarrichi” was first mentioned in writing in a document by the Roman-German Emperor Otto III. from the year 996. There is talk of a “region popularly called Ostarrichi”. That is a bit vague, it means the area around present-day Neuhofen an der Ybbs, which the emperor donated with this document to the Bishop of Freising, Gottschalk von Hagenau. The donation includes the farm itself and another thirty royal farms with everything the early medieval wish list had to offer: meadows, meadows, forests, cultivated and fallow lands, all water features, bee meadows, hunts, all paths, mills…
