“Ostarrichi” was first mentioned in writing in a document by the Roman-German Emperor Otto III. from the year 996. There is talk of a “region popularly called Ostarrichi”. That is a bit vague, it means the area around present-day Neuhofen an der Ybbs, which the emperor donated with this document to the Bishop of Freising, Gottschalk von Hagenau.
