On Saturday, winter returned in parts of Austria: around noon it snowed, especially on the north side of the Alps and in the south-east, especially in the area of the Carnic Alps and the Karawanks. “The snowfall would reach the east of the country and the region of Vienna in the evening and into the first half of the night,” predicted Martin Kulmar of the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) around noon. But already on Sunday afternoon, snow fell in the federal capital.
According to ZAMG, most fresh snow fell on Saturday in the Aussee area and in Mariazeller Land – in populated areas between five and 15 centimeters, in the mountains up to 30 centimeters.
White splendor will soon melt
According to Kulmar, it should stop snowing in the south in the evening. There’s no hope of too much white in Vienna, though: there won’t be much snow and the ground is already so warm it’ll melt quickly, they said. On Sunday it should only snow in the mountains. Frost is announced throughout Austria for Monday night.
Major avalanche danger in Vorarlberg
The avalanche danger in Vorarlberg has been temporarily raised to level 3 this weekend. Above 1800 meters, the avalanche danger is considerable, below it moderate, the avalanche warning service said on Saturday.
It snowed in large parts of Tyrol on Friday, and it will snow on Saturday as well. “Either in the morning, otherwise at least during the day, up to five centimeters of wet snow can also be expected in Innsbruck,” announces meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann of the weather service UBIMET.
