A week ago, fourteen people were killed and several injured when the roof of a train station collapsed in the Serbian city of Novi Sad. There is great anger and sadness in Serbia because it was announced on Friday that after repairs there had not yet been permission to use the station building.
Opposition politician Miroslav Aleksic presented to the public a document from the Ministry of Construction, which shows that the permit to start construction of the station building was issued only on October 17. It was requested on October 7 by the state-owned infrastructure company Infrastructurea Zeleznice (railway infrastructure). There appear to be no documents regarding a possible use permit.
Also problems with the train station building in Belgrade
The new Prokop train station building in Belgrade, which opened last year, is also likely to face problems with its use permit. According to the opposition, the Ministry of Construction refused to issue a copy in October until the identified shortcomings were addressed. It is currently unclear what exactly it was about.
Minister of Construction resigns
After the accident in Novi Sad, Construction Minister Goran Vesic resigned earlier this week. According to a statement, the Public Prosecution Service has questioned more than fifty people in the case; no further details have been released.
