Ecuador’s president has refused to revoke the state of emergency, a condition that indigenous communities have asked for negotiations to begin. At least four people have been killed in the mobilizations.

President Guillermo Lasso has expressed fear that they will remove him from power and in response to the mobilizations, he has declared a state of emergency in the provinces affected by the protests, including the capital Quito. At the same time, he has called for the opening of a dialogue process, although he has refused to withdraw the state of emergency, a precondition for indigenous communities to start negotiations.

At least four dead

At least four people have died in the country since the start of the national strike on June 13, according to the balance of the Alliance of Human Rights Organizations.

A young protester fell from the side of a mountain while escaping from a police contingent that fired tear gas at a group of indigenous people to prevent them from entering Quito.

In Puyo, the capital of the Amazon province of Pastaza, a young man lost his life after impact on the head of a tear gas canister fired “at close range”; according to the indigenous population, and for manipulating explosives, according to the police.
