Working atmosphere – lack of participation encourages job changes

Date:

If employees are dissatisfied with their options for participation in the company, they are almost three times more likely to consider changing jobs – regardless of industry, company size and professional position.

However, according to a survey by the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labor (AK), only 57 percent of employees are currently satisfied with this. In addition, there are other parameters that ensure a significantly better working atmosphere: creative opportunities in the workplace have as positive an impact on employee satisfaction as a works council or an employee representative in the company.

If the employee participation options are appropriate, 80 percent of respondents are satisfied with their superiors and with their company’s social attitude towards employees, according to the AK Upper Austria in the work climate index survey conducted with IFES and Foresight. However, when it comes to dissatisfied employees, 60 percent of respondents are dissatisfied with these factors. And 38 percent of those dissatisfied would like a different working time arrangement. However, only 23 percent of those who are satisfied with it are. Among those who are dissatisfied, the share of those who want to work less is also significantly higher.

Tourism and gastronomy perform the worst
There are clear differences per sector when it comes to assessing the possibilities for participation and design. Tourism and gastronomy perform the worst – both in terms of participation (49 percent satisfied) and in terms of design options (62 percent). When it comes to design options, education (74 percent) and health and social services (71 percent) stand out positively. However, only 52 percent are satisfied with the opportunities for participation. In construction, 71 percent of employees assess the design options positively and 67 percent are satisfied with the participation options.

Works councils and employee representatives make the difference
But whether there is a works council or employee representation also makes a difference for employees: if this interest group is present, 66 percent are satisfied with the income and 63 percent with the training opportunities. If this does not exist, the proportion of satisfied people drops to 55 or 52 percent. And 68 percent of employees in organized companies are satisfied with their social security. For companies without interest representation, this is only 55 percent.

Hairdressers and beauticians are at the bottom by profession when it comes to professional advocacy. Factory workers, on the other hand, are the most likely to have an interest group at 81 percent, followed by toolmakers (79 percent) and bank employees (77 percent).
