A Russian contract soldier from the city of Vladikavkaz has been sentenced to six years in prison for self-harm. He had wounded himself with an ax so he wouldn’t have to kill in the war in Ukraine.
The conditions under which Russian soldiers have to fight in Ukraine are often compared to scenes from horror films. One Russian man was so desperate that he hit himself on the head with an ax to avoid having to go to the front, reports Kavkas-Realii news portal.
During a temporary deployment to occupied territory in Ukraine, the soldier was injured and suffered a cut and several bruises. As a result, he was taken to hospital. It was also determined that the war participant was not on duty from December 2023 to February 2024.
The court showed no mercy
In the world’s largest country, refusing military service by feigning illness or self-harm carries a prison sentence of five to 10 years. The court found the Russian guilty and sentenced the man to six years in prison. As a result, his lawyer tried to challenge the verdict, pointing out that he was the father of two small children, had previously fought in the Ukrainian war, had the status of a war veteran, had injuries and had been honored with a state award. However, the court only said: the judgment remains valid because mitigating circumstances have already been taken into account.
Fight to the bitter end
The following applies to Russian soldiers since the autumn of 2022: The contracts concluded with the Ministry of Defense are of indefinite duration and the fight will continue until the bitter end. Even those who suffered serious injuries and miraculously escaped death are returned to the front. Even with hepatitis, HIV, no hands, no feet and splinters in the head, people were still fighting, as a Russian from the ‘Bereg Cooperative’, an association of independent journalists, described.
