Hundreds of refugees have climbed the border fence between Morocco and the Spanish city of Melilla. Video images on the internet showed how mostly young men ran through the streets, beaming with joy, singing and dancing. According to the Europa Press news agency, one of the gates in the border facility has been broken open.
They called the police. Some refugees were injured in the storming of the border installation. This consists of two parallel, six meters high barbed wire fences, from which the police repeatedly try to keep refugees away from Morocco. According to Spanish media reports, only 116 Moroccan officials were injured on Thursday when they refused to let some 500 people go to the border installation. A police officer then had to be treated in intensive care.
Several hundred people at once
This number is not unusual, as usually several hundred people at once try to surprise the border officials to cross the border in this way. These are mainly Africans from countries south of the Sahara. Morocco has been independent from Spain and France since 1956. Nevertheless, Spain still has two exclaves there – Melilla and Ceuta, located 250 kilometers to the west on the Strait of Gibraltar. That is what the Moroccan government claims.
